WHAT DO I HAVE TO BRING WITH ME?
Team Captains will collect the number bibs for team members before the event, they need to bring these to the event and also small safety pins to attach the number bibs to the shirts of team members. It is imperative that the team captain brings their smart phone - fully charged. All participants should wear comfortable footwear for walking, long sleeved top and a hat and ensure that you apply a good sunscreen. Take a look at the weather and decide if a raincoat or umbrella might be needed too. Bring a second Smartphone - fully charged with data credit - just in case the team captain's phone breaks.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE AT THE START LOCATION ON THE DAY?
Your team must arrive at your allocated start point by 11.30am. 10 minutes before starting time; team captains will line up ready for the start of the Ramble. When the captain reaches the start line, Ramble marshals will hand them a Clue Sheet as they press START on the App. Don’t press start on the App until you are just about to reach the Start as your time commences from that point. There will be a staggered start as teams receive their clue sheet and exit Russell Square.
As soon as your Team captain is handed the Clue sheet, gather the whole team together and plan out the best route to get to as many checkpoints as possible during your time. Outlying checkpoint questions are allocated a LOT more points so don't forget these! Last year's winning team did all the outlying checkpoints for maximum points! Now - solve the cryptic clue to locate to your first checkpoint.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OUR TEAM FINDS A CHECKPOINT LOCATION?
Gather your team together as the captain and all team members to read the checkpoint information and scan the QR code to reveal your random question. When your team thinks they have the right answer- select your option from the multiple choices on the App. The App will tell you immediately whether you were correct or not. No second chances - right or wrong - get on to the next checkpoint.
HOW MANY CHECKPOINTS DO WE HAVE TO VISIT ON THE DAY?
The more checkpoints your team visits - the more questions you'll answer which will give you more points toward winning! This year there will be more than 40 checkpoints hidden throughout the city. You don't have to visit all, but the more you visit the better chance you have of winning.
Some checkpoints will differ slightly in that teams will be required to carry out an activity rather than answer a clue in order to win the points. These are fun and are provided by our partners.
DO WE HAVE THE CHOICE OF WHICH CHECKPOINTS WE VISIT?
You are more than welcome to visit whatever checkpoint you want! Just remember you can only visit each checkpoint once.
WHERE ARE THE CHECKPOINT LOCATIONS?
Finding the Checkpoint locations is part of the challenge. These locations are slightly hidden, so you need to be switched on to find them! You'll be able to work it out!
WHAT TYPE OF TRANSPORT CAN WE USE TO GET AROUND?
The Ramble is not a race and participants cannot run or use private transport or taxis. It is for walking and public transport only. We encourage teams to get familiar with www.transperth.wa.gov.au. No bikes, skateboards, roller blades or scooters are allowed. A team found to be running or taking any form of private transport during the duration of the event will be disqualified.
WILL WE BE FINDING THINGS ALONG THE ROUTE LIKE A 'NORMAL' TREASURE HUNT?
The event doesn't require you to collect material items like an old fashioned treasure hunt. This is more cerebral, you will be collecting knowledge and great memories, and you will have to solve the clue to find the checkpoint. At each checkpoint you will receive a unique question with a set of multiple choice answers. By finding the correct answer your team will gain points, the team with the most points at the end of the Ramble will win the 'hunt'.
HOW ARE CHECKPOINT CHALLENGE POINTS CALCULATED?
Points are allocated to each question based on the degree of difficulty of the question, the estimated time taken to find and get to the checkpoint and the answer. So points for each question at the same checkpoint may vary.
HOW MANY CHECKPOINTS WILL WE HAVE TO VISIT ON RAMBLE DAY?
Last year, most teams visited about 30 checkpoints on the day from those available. The winners each year have visited every checkpoint, so get into training.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY MOBILE GOES FLAT AND NO-ONE ELSE IN MY TEAM HAS ANOTHER MOBILE OR MY MOBILE RUNS OUT OF CREDIT?
Please do make sure the mobile battery is fully charged before the event. We recommend that another team member brings their Smartphone too and downloads the Ramble App. Only one phone can log on at a time so only use the log in and password if the original phone is not working. Should both Smartphones fail, give up, it just wasn't your day!
DO TEAM BIB NUMBERS HAVE TO BE ATTACHED TO THE UPPER-BODY?
The wearing of the number bib in a prominent location on the body is vital to gain entry to the checkpoints. The preferred position is on the shirtfront however if that is difficult, the back of the upper body or arm is acceptable.
WILL I HAVE TO QUEUE AT ANY LOCATIONS?
Ramblers hate queuing so we have planned the event to minimize any queues at checkpoints. Please understand that there may be a queue at the start line and at some of the checkpoints but we will be working very diligently to make this a speedy process. Please be considerate of tourists and other people enjoying the city.
WHAT IF ONE OF OUR TEAM MATES GETS TIRED, CAN THEY PULL OUT?
Certainly, in fact many teams will stop for a coffee or lunch or just stop to admire a part of the city they haven't seen before, watch the yachts or do some quick shopping! Remember that your time limit for the event is exactly four hours from your start time. If a member cannot continue, just take their number bib and the rest of the team can continue on. Some teams will chose to finish early, and this is fine.
WHAT IF WE LOSE OUR TEAMMATES DURING THE RAMBLE?
If you lose each other and can't establish contact by mobile telephone, all team members should return to the last completed checkpoint location and re-gather there.
CAN WE CHOOSE TO RAMBLE TOGETHER WITH ANOTHER TEAM?
Each team is provided a random list of checkpoints and your team may not have the same options as the other team, so the best way is to arrange to meet up after the Ramble at Forrest Place and compare scores!
SHOULD WE GO HOME AFTER THE RAMBLE OR ATTEND THE POST-EVENT ENTERTAINMENT?
The choice is yours; but some teams will be drawn at random at the end to win great prizes a and must be present at the prize draw to be eligible, so we suggest you come back and enjoy the post event entertainment and find out who some of the winning teams were at Forrest Place.
